One Of The UK’s Largest Pig Farms Closes Down Following Animal Welfare Breaches

Flat House Farm, one of the UK's largest pig factory farms, has been shut down due to multiple animal welfare breaches. The owners, Elvidge Farms Ltd, were fined £4,500 for breaching the Animal Welfare Act, but no jail time was given. Viva! conducted an investigation in 2020, uncovering horrific conditions such as feral cats eating pigs alive, rotting corpses, and sick pigs in squalid conditions on the farm.

While Viva! is pleased that the farm is no longer operational, they express disappointment in the lack of severe penalties for the owners. This closure comes on the heels of a report highlighting the UK's "enforcement problem," where only a small percentage of farms are inspected each year and few complaints result in prosecutions for animal cruelty. The organization urges the public to go vegan to end the suffering of animals in the UK farming industry.
