Onego Bio Opens US Headquarters in San Diego to Scale Animal-Free Egg Protein

Onego Bio, a US-Finnish food technology company, has opened a commercial headquarters in San Diego, California, to scale up its animal-free egg protein product, Bioalbumen. The facility includes advanced laboratory capabilities and a test kitchen to showcase the functional applications of the product. Bioalbumen is created through precision fermentation and aims to replicate the taste, nutrition, and functionality of traditional egg proteins while significantly reducing environmental impact, with over 90% fewer emissions compared to conventional eggs.

The company plans to scale up Bioalbumen production through partnerships with co-manufacturers and is in the process of planning its first industrial-scale manufacturing facility in the US. Onego Bio has raised $70.8 million in funding to support its commercialization efforts in North America, where regulatory conditions are expected to facilitate a quicker market launch. The decision to base its US commercial operations in San Diego reflects the city's strengths as a biotechnology hub and its focus on sustainability, aligning with Onego Bio's vision of a more environmentally friendly food system.
