Oregon To Transition Its Primate Research Center Towards Human-Based Research
Plant Based News • Aug 21, 2026
The Oregon Health & Sciences University Board of Directors has decided to transition away from animal experiments at the Oregon National Primate Research Center towards human-based research. This shift is a response to changing attitudes towards animal testing within the scientific community and society, as well as ongoing concerns about animal welfare violations at the center.
Advocacy groups like the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine have welcomed the decision, calling for clear timelines to phase out primate experimentation entirely. The move towards cruelty-free alternatives to animal testing is gaining momentum, with federal agencies and researchers exploring AI, 3D bioprinted tissues, and other innovative methods as more ethical, affordable, effective, and safe alternatives.
