Origin by Ocean and CABB Group Partner to Convert Invasive Sargassum Algae into Valuable Ingredients

Origin by Ocean and the CABB Group are teaming up to establish a biorefinery in Finland that will convert invasive sargassum algae into valuable ingredients for industries such as cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals. This innovative solution aims to address the environmental and economic disruptions caused by sargassum blooms, which have been increasing in severity due to factors like agricultural runoff and rising ocean temperatures. The biorefinery is set to begin operations in 2028 and offers a sustainable alternative to fossil-based chemicals used in consumer products.

Located in Northern Europe's largest industrial hub for inorganic chemicals, the Kokkola Industrial Park, the biorefinery will be operated by the CABB Group under a Manufacturing as a Service arrangement. Origin by Ocean plans to expand its biorefinery network globally, with a focus on regions heavily impacted by sargassum blooms. The partnership between Origin by Ocean and CABB Group also has the potential to influence other industries, as multinational companies and fashion brands are looking to integrate sustainable ingredients derived from sargassum into their products. With a market worth approximately $220 billion, the utilization of algae-based ingredients could offer a global solution to both environmental challenges and the increasing demand for sustainable products.
