Ottawa Puts C$50M Behind CFIN to Bring AI and Automation to Canada’s Smaller Food Processors

Vegconomist • Oct 15, 2026
The Government of Canada is investing C$50 million in the Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN) to help small and medium-sized food and beverage processors adopt automation, artificial intelligence, and digital manufacturing systems. This funding will support Canadian food companies in harnessing innovation to boost productivity and competitiveness, as well as strengthen the domestic processing capacity. The investment is tied to Canada's National Food Security Strategy and aims to ensure Canadians have access to a stronger, more affordable, and secure food system.

CFIN expects the funding to reach over 200 SMEs and grow its national membership from over 9,500 to 20,000 through targeted programming. The organization anticipates creating around 300 new jobs and supporting more than 450 full-time equivalent positions. Through its Food 4.0 plan, CFIN will move processors onto Canadian-built automation, AI, and digital tools while supporting the domestic companies that develop them, aiming to help the food sector produce more at home and compete globally.
