Over 50 NYC Bodegas Add Plant-Based Eggs To Breakfast Sandwiches

Over 50 independent bodegas in NYC are now offering plant-based eggs from Eat Just, responding to egg shortages and high prices. The initiative, called "The Bird Flu Bailout," is a collaboration between Eat Just and the vegan deli chain Plantega. Customers who opt for plant-based eggs will receive a discount on Just Egg retail products to help offset rising egg prices.

The ongoing bird flu epidemic has led to the deaths of over 20 million egg-laying chickens, causing traditional egg prices to reach record highs. In contrast, demand for plant-based eggs has soared, with sales of Just Egg growing at five times the rate of the previous year. Bodega owners like Sam Alawadi have seen a significant increase in sales of plant-based egg sandwiches since adding them to their menus, highlighting the growing popularity of vegan egg alternatives in response to the egg shortage.
