Eight UK MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn and Paul McCartney, have signed an open letter opposing proposed EU restrictions on the use of traditional meat-related terms for plant-based foods. They argue that existing legislation already protects consumers and that the new restrictions could have a significant global impact, undermining economic growth and sustainability goals.

The MPs highlight that consumers overwhelmingly understand and support current naming conventions for plant-based products, and that the restrictions risk creating confusion, raising costs, and hindering innovation in the European plant-based market. They urge the European Commission to reject the proposed regulations and maintain the current regulatory framework that they believe sets the global standard for best practice in clear labelling.
