Plant-based Alternatives Now Cheaper Than Animal Products Across Several Categories in Germany

A new ProVeg study in Germany has found that plant-based alternatives are now cheaper than animal products in several categories. The cost of a plant-based shopping basket has fallen below that of its animal-based counterpart for the first time, with an average price difference of 16%, a reduction of 9 percentage points compared to the previous year. The study compared prices at six leading grocery chains and found that in 9 out of 12 product categories analyzed, prices for plant-based alternatives have decreased, with sliced cheese prices falling by over 40%.

The price equalization trend continues in most categories, with plant-based milk alternatives remaining cheaper than cow's milk at all retailers. This development comes at a time of high inflation in Germany, with food prices increasing by a third since 2020. The affordability of plant-based alternatives is seen as a positive development for households facing financial pressure due to rising costs, offering a ray of hope amidst economic challenges.
