Progress! New York State Fair Pauses Live Cow Birth Exhibit
PETA • Aug 18, 2026
The New York State Fair has announced a pause on its controversial live cow birthing exhibit, which has been a longstanding feature at the fair. Pregnant cows were placed on display and expected to give birth in front of gawking crowds, with over 400 calves reportedly born as part of the exhibit since 2013. Animal rights organization PETA is urging fair officials to make this pause permanent and retire the exhibit altogether.
The birthing exhibit presents a sanitized version of dairy farming while neglecting the suffering that cows experience in the industry. Cows are known to seek out quiet and secluded places when preparing to give birth, but the fair environment is filled with crowds, noise, and constant activity. PETA suggests alternative, animal-free options for future fairs, such as AI-powered robotic calves, to educate and engage visitors without subjecting pregnant cows and calves to stress and chaos.
