ProVeg Brazil Opens Pathway for Livestock Farmers to Shift to Plant-Based Agriculture

ProVeg Brazil has launched the Cultiva Project to assist livestock farmers in transitioning to plant-based agroforestry systems. The initiative aims to provide agricultural, legal, and marketing support to rural producers looking to shift from animal production to plant-based food production methods. This project seeks to offer economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially fair alternatives for family farmers in Brazil, in response to challenges like deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions associated with livestock farming.

The Cultiva Project will offer participating farmers free technical assistance in transitioning to agroforestry practices, which integrate trees with agricultural crops. These systems offer benefits such as improved biodiversity, soil health, and land use efficiency, while also offering higher income potential compared to traditional livestock production methods. By encouraging the adoption of plant-based agriculture, the Cultiva Project aims to accelerate the transition to more sustainable food systems, benefitting both producers and the environment in Brazil.
