ProVeg Calls for Restructuring of EU Agriculture Subsidies to Prioritise Sustainable Crops

ProVeg International has called for the EU's common agricultural policy (CAP) subsidies to be restructured to prioritize sustainable crop production in a new policy brief. The organization argues that subsidies should incentivize farming practices that enhance nature, improve rural livelihoods, and minimize social and economic costs. By reallocating subsidies according to the true cost of food production, accounting for environmental impact and the cost of unhealthy diets, funds can be redirected towards sustainable, organic, and regenerative farming methods.

In addition to recommending incentives for sustainable crop production, the policy brief suggests creating a grant fund for farmers to diversify their crops and shift towards more sustainable practices. Other recommendations include improving access to capital, developing knowledge and infrastructure systems, and increasing demand for sustainable produce through public procurement policies. By prioritizing sustainable farming practices, ProVeg aims to build resilience for farmers and ecosystems, creating a future where agriculture and the environment thrive together.
