A report by the Advanced Biotech for Sustainability (AB4S) coalition reveals that advanced biotechnology could reduce global emissions by 5% and create $1 trillion in annual economic value. The report, authored by various founding members of the coalition, highlights the potential of biotech to replace a significant portion of inputs to the global economy with sustainable bio-based solutions, ultimately saving 3-4 gigatons of CO2e and repurposing land equivalent to the size of India.

To achieve these goals, the report emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to address barriers such as large-scale production, funding, price parity with conventional products, regulatory approval, and consumer acceptance. Initiatives such as the Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Biomanufacturing Tech Hub and BioMADE in the US are already making strides in advancing the biotechnology sector. The AB4S coalition aims to provide a framework for organizations to prioritize bio-solutions, de-risk the scaling process, and ensure cost-effectiveness at scale in order to unlock investments, boost confidence in advanced solutions, and support commercial scaling.
