A report by sustainable finance think tank Planet Tracker highlights that the Global Methane Pledge, signed by 150 countries at COP26, is unachievable without action from major agri-food companies, as agriculture accounts for a significant portion of methane emissions. The report finds that 52 of the largest meat, dairy, and rice companies have substantial annual methane emissions, making them significant contributors to global emissions.

The lack of methane emissions disclosure and reduction targets among these companies is concerning, with only one company, Danone, making specific commitments in this area. Investors are urged to support methane-reduction solutions to drive down costs and protect long-term value, as companies in the sector prepare to attend COP30. Without stronger action from these agri-food giants, the Global Methane Pledge risks falling short of its targets, highlighting the crucial role investors play in pushing for accountability and emissions reductions.
