Rewe to Open First Fully Vegan Supermarket in Germany: Report

German retail giant Rewe Group is set to open its first 100% vegan supermarket in Germany, following the success of fully plant-based stores under its Billa supermarket chain in Austria. The new concept will be located in the former flagship store of Veganz in Berlin-Friedrichshain, taking over from the first fully vegan supermarket chain in Europe.

Rewe's move reflects the growing interest in veganism in Germany, the largest plant-based market in Europe. With the country's government supporting alternative proteins and dietary guidelines recommending a shift towards plant-based foods, Rewe aims to appeal to the country's increasing appetite for vegan products. The retailer has seen success with its plant-based offerings, including a 45% increase in vegan sales in 2022, and plans to expand its vegan footprint with the new plant-based store in Berlin.
