Rhiza Mycoprotein Cleared for Sale in Canada as BMC Ingredients Adds Third Regulatory Market
Vegconomist • Jul 28, 2026
California-based BMC Ingredients has received clearance from Health Canada to sell its whole-food mycelium ingredient, Rhiza mycoprotein, in the Canadian market. This approval allows for the use of Rhiza as an alternative protein and dietary fiber source in a variety of products, including meat, poultry, seafood, meat alternatives, and dairy analogs. This marks the third market to authorize the ingredient, with previous approvals from the U.S. FDA and the Singapore Food Agency.
Rhiza is produced by fermenting Neurospora crassa, a fungal strain commonly found in Asian fermented foods. The ingredient boasts a high protein content, complete amino acid profile, and various nutritional benefits, positioning it as a sustainable and versatile ingredient for a wide range of applications. BMC Ingredients is now scaling production to reach commercial volumes by the second quarter of 2027, aiming to achieve price parity with commodity beef and expand into new product categories beyond meat applications like dairy alternatives and baked goods.
