A horse has died on the set of The Rings Of Power, prompting condemnation from animal rights groups. The incident took place during the second series of the Lord of the Rings spin-off, with the horse reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest before filming began. The use of real animals in TV and film has been long-controversial, with calls from groups like PETA to replace them with CGI to prevent further harm to animals.

This is not the first time producers have come under fire for real animal use on set. In 2012, whistleblowers reported instances of animal abuse and neglect during the filming of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, leading to 27 animal deaths.
