Satellite Data Reveals Alarming Animal Factory Pollution Disparities in North Carolina

A 2025 study utilizing satellite data has exposed the environmental injustices caused by industrial pig farms in eastern North Carolina. The research, conducted by the University of Virginia, revealed disproportionately higher concentrations of toxic pollutants in areas with significant populations of Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous residents. These disparities were exacerbated by warmer temperatures and wind conditions, with certain communities experiencing elevated ammonia levels on calm days or during hot weather.

The study highlights the urgent need for accountability and action to address the environmental injustices inflicted by animal factories on vulnerable communities. Director of Research and Education at the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network, Chris Lamont Brown, emphasized the significance of the research, stating that it validates concerns and observations made by communities in eastern North Carolina regarding the health impacts of these facilities.
