A team of scientists has successfully grown microalgae using waste from cultivated meat production, creating a circular cell culture system that could significantly reduce production costs. The study, led by Melanie Oey at the University of Queensland, shows a 60 to 90 percent reduction in growth media costs by utilizing microalgae to absorb nutrients from meat waste and supply oxygen to meat cells. This breakthrough could help overcome one of the biggest challenges in getting cultivated meat onto supermarket shelves.
Despite the potential benefits of cultivated meat in transforming the global food system, the high production costs have proven to be a barrier. The team's innovative approach not only has the potential to lower costs but also create an additional revenue stream for producers by producing more microalgae than needed for nutrient recycling.
