Shy 38 Sanctuary Offers Humane Alternative to Educational Classroom Chick-Hatching Projects in Kansas

Shy 38 Inc., a farm sanctuary in Kansas, rescued 31 chicks from a local school's chick-hatching project and developed an educational program called "The Hatching Kindness Project" to prevent such projects in the future. The sanctuary provides permanent sanctuary to over 70 roosters and advocates for the humane treatment of chickens. The program includes a complete curriculum for elementary school students, a book, models, an educational app, and access to a live chicken webcam to teach children about the life cycle without using live animals.

"The Hatching Kindness Project" aims to educate children about chickens while promoting a compassionate alternative to traditional chick hatching projects in schools. Elizabeth Wallace, a volunteer with Shy 38 Inc., a former teacher, developed the program in collaboration with other organizations. The sanctuary will present the program at the upcoming APHE National Humane Education Conference in Kansas City.
