Simple Planet Unveils Serum-Free Cell Culture Medium, Slashing Costs by 99.8%

Simple Planet, a South Korea-based alternative protein company, has developed a serum-free cell culture medium for use in cell-based food production, biopharmaceuticals, and regenerative medicine. The patented medium, created through probiotics recycling, is set to launch globally in 2025. By replacing the costly and ethically challenging fetal bovine serum with probiotics-derived metabolites, the medium slashes production costs by over 99.8% compared to traditional media.

Successful trials have shown that the new formulation enhances myoblast cell proliferation while maintaining cell morphology, making it a potential alternative to serum-based media. In addition to a general-purpose medium, Simple Planet has developed specialized formulations tailored to specific cell types. The company’s focus on creating cost-effective and sustainable solutions in cell culture technology is aimed at advancing real-world adoption across industries while addressing supply chain limitations and high production costs associated with conventional animal-derived cell culture media.
