Solar Foods, a Finnish company, has submitted a GRAS notification to the FDA for its air-based protein, Solein, in hopes of receiving a no questions letter. The FDA will conduct a scientific evaluation based on the safety documentation provided by the company, with an estimated approval timeline by the end of next year. Solar Foods aims to focus on the US Health & Performance Nutrition segment and has signed a Letter of Intent with a leading brand for commercialization efforts.

Having already obtained self-affirmed GRAS status for Solein in September 2024, Solar Foods can now engage in marketing and sales activities in the US. The company has also received novel food regulatory approval in Singapore and is awaiting approvals in the UK and EU. By obtaining the no questions letter from the FDA, Solar Foods hopes to expand Solein's market possibilities and facilitate entry into other markets that do not require specific novel food approvals.
