Solar Foods has partnered with OHB System AG to test its Solein® gas fermentation technology in space, supported by the European Space Agency's Terrae Novae Exploration Programme. The project, named HOBI-WAN, aims to adapt the Solein production system for microgravity environments like the International Space Station. The collaboration with OHB, experienced in space-based experiments, will ensure the safety and effectiveness of the system in orbit.

Solein, a protein produced through fermentation using air and electricity, could provide a sustainable protein source for space missions, reducing reliance on Earth resupplies. The technology could also address food and water scarcity in space, crucial for long-duration missions. Solar Foods aims for Solein to become the primary protein source for space explorers by 2035, working towards operational capability to produce Solein in various production scales in space.
