South Holland Invests €1 Million to Develop Plant-Based Egg Alternative

The EGGcellent project, a collaboration between Vivici, Proeon, Applikon, and Planet B.io, has received €1 million in funding from the Province of South Holland. This initiative aims to develop a sustainable vegan alternative to chicken eggs for the bakery industry, addressing the increasing demand driven by economic, environmental, and animal welfare concerns. By combining innovative ingredients and utilizing advanced bioreactor systems from companies like Getinge, the project seeks to create a prototype that can replace eggs in industrial baking applications.

Minister Stolk highlighted the importance of collaboration between SMEs, the manufacturing industry, and the Planet B.io ecosystem in tackling global challenges. The project aligns with South Holland's growth agenda by integrating key technologies in process and biomolecular technologies, contributing to regional innovation and sustainability in food production. Co-founder of Proeon Foods, Kevin Parekh, expressed enthusiasm over the funding, emphasizing the significance of advancing plant-based protein innovation through this grant-supported initiative.
