Spain Launches Europe’s First AgriFoodtech Sandbox to Drive Technological Advancements in Food Production

Spain has launched Europe's first AgriFoodtech Sandbox in collaboration with the regions of Navarra and La Rioja to drive technological advancements in the agrifood industry. Managed by the National Center for Food Technology and Safety (CNTA), this initiative offers a controlled environment for startups, companies, and industry groups to test innovative products, processes, and technologies under regulatory oversight. The sandbox aims to accelerate innovation in the agrifood value chain, including new ingredients, food preservation methods, packaging strategies, and resource use efficiency.

The launch event, attended by key government officials, highlighted the strategic importance of innovation in the agri-food sector for economic growth, social cohesion, and sustainability. The initiative aims to attract investment, talent, and promote dialogue between innovators and regulatory bodies to shape the future of agrifood regulations in Spain and Europe. The sandbox also serves as a platform for collaboration, technology transfer, and adoption of key innovations in response to the growing challenges faced by the sector, such as digitization, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and precision agriculture.
