Spanish agrifood firm Elian has secured €40M ($45.9M) in funding from state-owned fund Cofides to turn Barcelona into a plant-based production hub and boost the EU’s food security. The investment aims to scale up plant-based protein production at Elian's facility in Barcelona, contributing to the EU's food sovereignty goals.
Elian is one of Europe's leading soybean processors, producing a variety of plant-based ingredients with a focus on sustainability and innovation. The company's expansion project will increase capacity for producing protein derivatives for human food and animal feed, ultimately reducing Europe's reliance on imports and making the market more resilient to global supply chain disruptions. The investment from Cofides demonstrates institutional support for Elian's vision to lead Europe in plant-based protein sovereignty.
