The Tofoo Co, a UK tofu leader, is acquiring German seitan producer Topas, known for its Wheaty brand, in preparation for expanding into Europe's largest plant-based market. The acquisition, set to close later this month, will give The Tofoo Co access to Topas’s 33-year manufacturing expertise and a strong foothold in Germany. Topas, founded in 1993, currently employs over 100 people and has a turnover of €14 million.

The acquisition is seen as a strategic move to drive the expansion of plant proteins across Europe, with Topas’s seitan products and manufacturing capability complementing The Tofoo Co’s existing portfolio. The deal is part of a trend of consolidation in the alternative protein market, with numerous companies merging, being acquired, or shutting down in recent months. This acquisition showcases The Tofoo Co's commitment to bringing natural, organic plant-based proteins to more consumers in Europe.
