This Biotech Company Says It Could Produce Mycoprotein For Less Than A Dollar Per Kilogram

Biotech company Planetary SA is looking to produce its mycoprotein for less than $1 per kilogram by partnering with Damphur Bio Organics Limited (DBO) in India. This collaboration would allow for industrial-scale production, increasing output and reducing overhead costs. Mycoprotein is popular for its fibrous texture, neutral flavor, and nutrient-dense profile, making it a sustainable alternative to animal products.

The companies aim to leverage Planetary's fermentation platform and DBO's cost-competitive sugar infrastructure to bring affordable mycoprotein to the Indian market. By achieving a production cost below $1 per kilogram, mycoprotein would significantly undercut the prices of traditional animal proteins, opening up new growth opportunities in the alternative meat market. Additionally, blended meat products combining mycoprotein with animal proteins could offer environmentally-friendly options for flexitarians and meat-eaters.
