A new analysis by the Better Protein Institute has found that plant-based proteins, specifically tofu, outperform animal sources on sustainability and health metrics. The study evaluated 20 high-protein foods based on a multidimensional rating system that considers both environmental and nutritional factors. Tofu emerged as the highest-scoring product, while cheddar cheese ranked last.
Tofu was found to have the lowest greenhouse gas emissions and water-use impact, making it the most sustainable protein source. Additionally, plant-based proteins like chia seeds, beans, and quinoa scored higher in both environmental and health metrics compared to animal-based proteins. The study aims to empower consumers, policymakers, and organizations to make more informed decisions about protein choices for the benefit of animals, the planet, and future generations.
