UK Dairy Farm to be Partially Transformed into Bird Reserve

A former intensive dairy farm in Wiltshire, England, known as Roundbarrow Farm, is being partially transformed into a chalk downland nature reserve in collaboration with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The project aims to create a thriving habitat for diverse species by reducing soil fertility over several years to establish flower-rich chalk grasslands. This transformation will not only benefit local wildlife but also contribute to improving water quality in the area.

While the farm will continue to exploit some cows at a lower intensity to help maintain the grassland, the public will have opportunities to engage with the site through annual open days and a new permissive bridleway. The project also includes plans for community engagement, such as a potential community orchard, educational opportunities, and strengthening links with local farmers. Councillor Dominic Muns expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the shared vision to allow an exemplar chalk grassland to establish.
