UK Government Announces £22 Million Investment In Animal Testing Alternatives

The UK government has announced a £22 million investment to move away from animal testing in favor of advanced alternatives such as growing miniature organs from human tissue. This includes a £20 million center for growing organs and £2 million for nine projects focusing on lab-grown models and AI technology. The aim is to accelerate the development of testing on human tissue to improve treatments and reduce the need for animal testing.

Despite a small decrease in animal testing in the UK, the use of dogs, cats, horses, and monkeys has increased. Many animal tests are conducted even though approved alternatives exist, with over 90 percent of drugs passing animal testing but failing in human trials. The investment in animal testing alternatives is seen as an exciting development that could lead to personalized medicine and more effective treatments for diseases.
