UK Government To Allow Wild Beaver Releases For Nature Recovery

The UK government has announced that it will allow beaver releases into the wild in England after years of rewilding advocacy and debate. Nature groups will now be able to release beavers into English waterways, with a detailed plan for licensing and population management in place for already established beaver colonies.

Beavers, as a keystone species, are essential for their ecosystem and bring a wealth of ecological benefits to England. Their presence helps to revitalize degraded landscapes, restore rivers and wetlands, address the nature crisis, and contribute to national biodiversity targets. With their ability to promote other wildlife, alleviate flooding and drought, clean water, reduce siltation, and sequester carbon, beavers play a vital role in enhancing the environment in England.

This decision marks a shift towards allowing beavers to reclaim their place in the English landscape, after being hunted to extinction nearly half a century ago. The thriving current population of around 400 animals, including 30 families in Somerset's River Otter, demonstrates the positive impact beavers have on their surroundings, making their reintroduction an important step towards nature recovery in the UK.
