UK MPs Sign ‘Mother’s Day Card’ Urging The Government To Ban Pig Cages

UK MPs have signed a "Mother's Day card" urging the government to ban the use of cages for female pigs after giving birth. The card was presented to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and addressed to environment secretary Thérèse Coffey. The MPs highlighted that despite a promise to review the use of farrowing crates two years ago, the government has yet to take action.

The campaign, titled "The Crate Escape," is a joint effort from the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, Humane Society International/UK, and Compassion In World Farming. MPs from various political parties, as well as celebrities, have joined the cause. The crates, used to house pregnant and mother pigs, are seen as cruel by animal welfare experts, with arguments against their use including higher piglet mortality rates and economic motivations of farmers. Public opinion appears to be shifting, with a majority of Brits supporting a ban on farrowing crates.
