The UK government has unveiled a roadmap to phase out animal testing more quickly, with a commitment of £75 million to develop alternative methods. These alternative methods include organ-on-a-chip systems, artificial intelligence, and 3D bioprinted tissues. The roadmap sets specific targets, such as ending certain animal tests by 2026 and reducing tests on dogs and primates by 2030.

Funding of £60 million will be used to set up a collaboration hub for researchers and a center for regulatory approval of new alternatives. An additional £15.9 million has been committed to advance promising "human in vitro" models. The strategy will be overseen by a committee chaired by Science Minister Lord Vallance, with key performance indicators to monitor progress and commitments to strengthen training in alternative methods for researchers.
