US Senators Reintroduce Bill to Block “Egg” Label for Plant-Based Alternatives

US Senators John Fetterman and Joni Ernst have reintroduced the Consistent Egg Labels Act, aiming to regulate the labeling of plant-based egg alternatives. The bill calls for the FDA to enforce restrictions on products that use terms like “eggs” or “egg products,” requiring clear differentiation from animal-derived counterparts. The bill defines “eggs” and “egg products” strictly as products derived from avian poultry, with guidelines for nationwide enforcement within 180 days.

The bill addresses concerns within the agricultural industry about plant-based alternatives using traditional animal-product terms. While industries like beef and dairy have also sought labeling restrictions, studies suggest consumers can distinguish between plant-based and animal-based products.
