Vegan Gas Station Hangry Planet Sells for More Than $12M After Four Years of Trading

Hangry Planet, a fully plant-based gas station convenience store in San Bruno, California, has been sold for over $12 million, covering both the property and the business. The store, which only stocks plant-based products, saw an initial drop in sales of around 20% after removing animal products. However, sales later increased by about 30% as vegan and plant-based shoppers began making the location a destination purchase rather than just a fuel stop along an existing route.

The store's founder, Bobak Bakhtiari, aimed to reach non-vegan shoppers with the plant-based assortment, hoping to educate and transform people's eating habits in a high-traffic convenience store environment. The store was recently taken over by Brar Pacific Oil, though it is unclear if the all-plant-based assortment will be retained by the new operator. Hangry Planet's success shows that convenience retail in the plant-based category remains relatively untested territory, with distribution mainly concentrated in grocery stores and food service outlets.
