Vegan Ready Meals are Coming to the US Military in 2027

In 2027, the US military will introduce vegan meals and snacks as part of the Meals, Ready to Eat (MREs) program in response to requests from service members. Currently, the MRE menu includes only four vegetarian options out of 24 dishes, but starting in 2027, these will be replaced by vegan alternatives. The move comes after years of internal discussions and a survey showing that 81% of service members believe the military should provide plant-based MREs.

The addition of vegan MREs will result in over six million vegan meals being served to service members annually. This shift towards plant-based options in the military reflects a growing demand for more sustainable eating habits among soldiers, showcasing a trend towards environmental consciousness and healthier alternatives to traditional meat-heavy military rations.
