Vegan Society of Ireland Wants Budget 2027 to Fund Farmers Switching to Fruit and Vegetables

The Vegan Society of Ireland is urging the Irish Government to create a state-backed Plant-Based Food Fund in Budget 2027, with a portion of the funding earmarked for farmers transitioning to fruit and vegetable production. The society has also requested the development of a National Plant-Based Action Plan for Ireland and dedicated support for farmers entering horticulture.

The VSI's push for increased investment in fruit and vegetable production is based on data showing that the majority of these foods consumed in Ireland are imported, and the number of commercial vegetable growers has significantly declined in recent years. Drawing inspiration from Denmark's successful implementation of a similar plan, the VSI argues that Ireland can follow suit and provide support to farmers looking to make the switch to plant-based agriculture.
