Why This Dorset Dairy Farmer Gave His Cows To A Sanctuary And Turned His Farm Vegan

Dorset dairy farmer Laurence Candy lost his cow herd to bovine tuberculosis in 2019, leading him to transition his farm to become entirely vegan. After losing his milk contract, Candy turned his farm into a fully organic beef and dairy producer before discovering veganic farming and seeking the help of the Vegan Organic Network. In October 2022, Candy became the UK's first certified Biocyclic Vegan Standard farmer, not using animals or animal byproducts on his farm.

Candy's decision to give his remaining cows to a sanctuary sparked negative criticism from the farming community, but he received support from the vegan community. He hopes his story will inspire other farmers to consider transitioning to veganic farming and calls for both the farming and vegan communities to work on understanding each other to create positive change in the world.
