Banning fur farming makes more economic sense than raising “standards”

A new report reveals that phasing out fur farming in the EU would cost significantly less than implementing new welfare standards. The estimated cost of a five-year phase-out is €144 million, while implementing new standards could cost between €201 million and €920 million. The report argues that maintaining fur production under new standards would require ongoing public support and would impose wider costs on society.

Animal protection organizations have raised concerns that changing standards cannot adequately address the welfare problems associated with keeping wild species in cage-based systems. Recent evidence from fur farms shows severe welfare concerns, despite industry commitments to address breeding and welfare issues. The report urges the European Commission to listen to citizens, follow economic and scientific evidence, and bring an end to fur farming in the EU.
