London Mayor Urged To Make City More Plant-Based To Meet Climate Goals

Green Party Member Zack Polanski has urged London Mayor Sadiq Khan to endorse the Plant Based Treaty and increase accessibility to veganism in the city. Polanski emphasized the importance of plant-based diets in addressing the climate and ecological emergency, pointing out that meat consumption is a significant contributor to emissions despite making up only five percent of food mass consumed in London. He suggested that Khan collaborate with organizations like ProVeg UK to promote plant-based eating, particularly in initiatives like free school meals funding.

The Plant Based Treaty, which cities like Edinburgh and Norwich have already endorsed, aims to combat environmental issues linked to animal agriculture and support a transition to more plant-based diets. Animal agriculture is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, making it necessary to shift towards sustainable food systems to meet climate goals. By signing the treaty and implementing measures like introducing vegan meals in schools, London can take significant steps towards reducing its environmental impact and promoting healthier, more sustainable food choices.
