Metrosert Opens Estonia’s Fermentation Bottleneck With €2M Pilot Plant

Estonia's Metrosert is opening up opportunities for fermentation companies in the Nordic-Baltic region by awarding a contract for a €2 million pilot plant designed to bridge the gap between laboratory volumes and production-ready scale. The facility will offer open-access to companies working on novel foods, with fermentation capacity ranging from 50 litres to 5,000 litres, along with downstream processing on-site.

The shared pilot infrastructure provided by Metrosert aims to reduce development risks and accelerate the transition from bench results to commercial volumes for biotechnology companies. With a focus on precision fermentation for alternative dairy, egg protein, fats, microbial biomass, and more, the pilot plant is set to serve as a bridge between scientific innovation and commercial application, offering support for development pathway planning, collaboration projects, and connecting with partners and prospective customers.
