Plant-Based Alternatives Now Up to 30% Cheaper Than Meat & Dairy in Dutch Supermarkets

Plant-based alternatives in Dutch supermarkets are now up to 30% cheaper than meat and dairy products, according to a recent analysis. The cost savings can be as high as 30% at certain supermarkets, making plant-based options more affordable for consumers. This price difference is attributed to targeted pricing strategies, sustainable private-label brands, and inflation that has driven up prices for animal products.
The study found that vegan chicken pieces, burgers, and butter offer the biggest cost savings, with plant-based own-brand products being the most economically priced. However, not all plant-based options are as affordable yet, with some categories, such as mayonnaise and yoghurt, still being significantly more expensive than their animal-based counterparts. Despite the overall drop in plant-based product sales, supermarkets are making progress in making plant-based alternatives more accessible and affordable to consumers in the Netherlands.
