Scientist Names Tofu The Single Best Protein For Nutrition, Sustainability, And Affordability
Plant Based News • Sep 03, 2026
Scientist Chris Macdonald has developed a new scoring system, the Better Protein Institute (BPI) Score, to determine the best protein option for nutrition, sustainability, and affordability. Tofu emerged as the top scorer, outperforming 19 other popular protein sources, including meat and dairy. Tofu's production has minimal environmental impact, emitting significantly less CO2 and requiring less land compared to beef, making it an optimal choice for both people and planet.
Macdonald's scoring system highlights the disparity between plant-based and animal-based proteins, with the top-scoring products being plant-based and the bottom-scoring products being animal-based. The BPI Score is being further developed to include factors such as animal welfare, antimicrobial resistance, and zoonotic disease risk, which are expected to further highlight the advantages of alternative proteins over animal products. Ultimately, choosing protein sources like tofu is seen as a compassionate choice for the planet and future generations.
