These Iowa Farmers Raised 8,000 Pigs a Year. Switching to Mushrooms Saved Their Future.

The Faaborg family, who used to raise 8,000 pigs a year on their farm in Iowa, made the decision to switch to growing mushrooms after facing the negative impacts of factory farming. They sought help from the Transfarmation Project, which aims to provide farmers with resources and support to transition out of animal agriculture. With the help of the project, the Faaborgs now operate a mushroom farming facility that also serves as a demonstration hub for other farmers looking to move away from the factory farming model.

Other farms that have received assistance from the Transfarmation Project have transitioned to growing hemp, fruits, and vegetables, among other sustainable ventures. The Faaborgs' new farm, known as 1100 Farm, focuses on mushroom production while also making strides towards ecological and personal healing on their land. The family plans to continue expanding their mushroom-growing capacity, selling mushroom products, and implementing rewilding initiatives, showing that a better future for farming is possible by planting different seeds.
