World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD): “Protein Diversification Is Not a One-Size-Fits-All Concept”
Vegconomist • Aug 14, 2026
WBCSD, through Laura van Geel, emphasizes the importance of protein diversification in creating healthier and more sustainable food systems. This involves a shift towards a more balanced mix of protein sources, such as plant-based proteins, aquatic proteins, blended products, and fermentation-derived proteins. Businesses are calling on governments to provide incentives and policy frameworks to support this transition, including financial support for diverse protein supply chains, updated dietary guidelines, and long-term policy frameworks that integrate protein diversification into national strategies.
While challenges such as policy coherence and creating enabling conditions for scale persist, there is progress seen in markets like China, the EU, and the US in elevating protein diversification as a priority. However, there is a need for clear and science-based dietary guidance to align public health objectives, consumer information, and private-sector investments. Ultimately, businesses are seeking clarity and predictability from policymakers to make long-term investment decisions in innovation, product development, and supply chains for a more diversified and sustainable protein system.
