Precision Fermentation Industry Could Generate $30Bn Annually for Australia, Says New White Paper

A new white paper released by Australia's Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) explores the potential of the precision fermentation industry in the country. With more than 70 contributors from industry, government, and academia, the paper highlights precision fermentation as a crucial technology that could transform the food system by producing tailored and sustainable proteins, fats, and other compounds. Recommendations outlined in the report include developing a National Food Plan, appointing a food minister, establishing regulatory frameworks, and standardizing assessment methods for environmental impact.

The authors estimate that precision fermentation could generate up to $30 billion in annual revenue in Australia by 2040 and create over 50,000 jobs. This innovative technology enables the production of individual food ingredients without relying on agriculture and presents opportunities for cost reduction and the development of new markets for innovative food products. With the potential to enhance and diversify the food supply, precision fermentation could play a key role in transforming the food system in Australia.
