The UK has released new guidance for companies developing cultivated meat proteins and other novel foods to certify and sell in the country. This includes food business hygiene requirements, scientific evaluation criteria, practical recommendations for stronger applications for market authorization, and guidance on conducting taste trials of novel foods and cell-cultivated products. The Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland aim to support cultivated meat companies by providing a Business Support Service that connects them with regulatory experts, with a focus on ensuring the safety of these new food technologies.
The guidance, part of the Cell-Cultivated Products Sandbox Programme, aims to reduce barriers and increase transparency in the market authorization process for novel foods. Deputy director of innovation at the FSA, Thomas Vincent, emphasizes the importance of consumer safety and efficient pathways to authorizing emerging food technologies, ultimately aiming to reduce the negative impact of animal products without compromising on safety standards.
